Why All Types of Reading Matter

One of my passions is helping people understand that reading is reading, no matter the form it takes.
Many have strong opinions that physical books are the only thing that truly counts. I say no to that! Let's talk about the different formats and why they are all valid.
A physical book where you can turn the actual pages

Great! I'm so glad you love that tactile experience, from the feel of the pages to the new (or old) book smell, it's a lovely experience! But it is not the only valid one.
Kindle or eReader

Fantastic! A Kindle/eReader is a wonderful way to make a book more accessible. You can make the text and margins bigger, change the font to make it more legible, adjust the brightness, and as an added bonus, even take it in a tub or pool without the book getting damaged.
As a librarian, I understand why some are worried that eBooks will eliminate the need for libraries, but I don't think it will!
Libraries use apps like Libby and Hoopla so that patrons can have free access to countless numbers of eBooks (as well as audiobooks, magazines, movies, music, etc.). Not only does this provide free access to patrons who can't afford Kindle Unlimited or other subscriptions, it also gets the library those much needed stats just as a physical book would.
Not to keep preaching, but libraries do WAY more than just books. Libraries are a community gathering space where people can learn about new topics for free through programs with expert presenters, learn how to apply for jobs, create resumes, connect with local assistance, craft, and so much more. Not to mention they are one of the only places that people are actually allowed to stay and hangout at no cost. Even coffee shops want you to buy a drink, and other places expressly say "no loitering". Please, come "loiter" at your local library!
Audiobooks

Stellar! An audiobook is sure special. It allows you to be immersed in the world of the book you are reading while commuting, cleaning, and so much more. Plus, you are still growing your imagination, your vocabulary, and your pronunciation. You are learning about whatever that book is talking about and getting to walk in another person's shoes through story. How dare we say it's not reading? (note, audible is not the only way, see the Libby and Hoopla apps above, as well as Libro.fm (supports local bookstores) and good old fashioned CDs, available still at some libraries.
Graphic Novels/Manga

Stupendous! If anything, these require even more brain power to digest. Not only are you reading words, but you are also translating the images, making your brain work in multiple ways. Have you ever tried reading one? It actually is quite difficult and takes a lot of practice. I admire those who can read graphic novels and manga quickly and comprehensively. Also, they support another type of artist, how cool is that?
Conclusion
Whether you are reading a physical book, enjoying an eBook, listening to an audiobook, or reading a graphic novel, you are expanding your vocabulary, working your imagination, and growing your empathy. Reading is powerful, no matter the form.
Here's a little video I made a while ago about just this:
In the next installment, we'll talk about different genres, and why all those matter as well (yes, Twilight too.)
